Hello, this is pastor gary from first baptist church of laplata. On this date in history, 246 years ago, Congress formally renamed the United Colonies to the United States. The Declaration of Independence had been printed, signed, and sent to England, so Congress demonstrated our nation’s independence by renaming us. A bloody revolution was yet to be fought but would eventually result in the independence that had been declared. The word “colonies” denoted England’s ownership; the word “states” denoted emancipation. These may have only been words, but they were very significant words. God has been known to change names as well; for instance, Jacob meaning “trickster” had his named changed to “Israel” meaning “Prince with God.” Abram had his name changed to Abraham going from “exalted father” to “father of many.” In the New Testament, Saul had his named changed to Paul. When God changes someone’s name, He changes His relationship with them. When Congress changed our name, they changed our relationship with England. We are now great allies and good friends with England and mourn with them the loss of the longest reigning monarch in their and world history, Queen Elizabeth II.
