How it all started...
First Baptist Church of La Plata began in 1960 as a mission of the Marbury Baptist Church. The first services were held on February 21, 1960, in what had been a funeral home on Rt 225 in La Plata. In 1961, under the leadership of Rev. Austin Matthews, the mission purchased the building in which it had been meeting.

Expanding the vision...
A constitution service was held on February 20, 1966, at which time the La Plata Baptist Mission became the First Baptist Church of La Plata. By the late 1970's the church was in desperate need of more space and in 1979 additional land was donated to the church and a new sanctuary, with a seating capacity of 300, was built and dedicated in late October of 1980.
Blessed with Continued Growth...
The church continued to obtain more land, and expand parking lots, and in May 2001, the church broke ground on a new educational building.
The dedication ceremony was held on November 24, 2002 (a bit delayed to the April 2002 tornado that swept through La Plata).
